The Kootenai River is officially in its happy place. According to the latest July 25, 2026 report from Linehan Outfitting, Libby Dam is holding steady at a rock-solid 9,000 cfs through August, setting up textbook summer conditions.
The heatwave is backing off into the comfortable 80s and low 90s, and the trout are throwing a party in the fast lane. If you’re heading out, skip the deep thinking and just fish the fast water. As the crew at Linehan puts it:
“9000cfs is a perfect flow and our preferred sweet spot and water conditions are terrific.”
- Dry Fly Action: It’s simple, steady, and deadly. You can comfortably tie on a double-dry or a dry-dropper rig and leave it alone. In the words of the guides, a “small purple chubby with 24” perdigon dropper. Yup. All day.”
- Nymphing: The trout are moving out of the deep slow pools and into the buffet line. Target the riffles, boulder gardens, and heavy currents. Linehan recommends you just drop “4 feet to a couple perdigons with a B and off you go.”
- Streamers: If you’re hunting for a trophy, pack the big stuff like Circus Peanuts or Drunk & Disorderlies. Keep it low, slow, and twitchy.
