Fall is finding its groove in Southwest Montana, and according to Montana Angler, cooling water temperatures are bringing rivers back into the “sweet spot,” opening up everything from tiny meadow streams to the lower stretches of the Madison, Yellowstone, and Gallatin.
With summer crowds thinning out and trout starting to “drop their guard again,” September is serving up some prime fishing opportunities without the need to beat the sunrise. Hoppers are still the main attraction on lightly pressured waters, while sneaky little ants, beetles, and small mayflies are better bets for trout that have seen one too many foam flies. Nymphing remains productive, and streamer fishing is heating up as big browns get restless ahead of the spawn. As temperatures drop, look for trout shifting out of heavy riffles and into softer seams, slower runs, and foam eddies.
