If you thought winter was for hibernating, think again, because the 2026 ice fishing contests are gearing up to turn frozen lakes into the hottest hangouts of the season. This year’s lineup has something for everyone. So sharpen those auger blades, pack the snacks, and get ready to drop a line, because 2026 is shaping up to be one heck of a year on the hardwater!
In Montana, (via FWP) if you’re charging an entry fee or handing out prizes for catching fish, you’re basically running a fishing contest. Small contests (under 30 anglers and prizes worth $500 or less) don’t need a permit, though it’s a good idea to give your local Regional Fisheries Manager a heads-up with the date and your contact info. Anything bigger, and you’ll need to fill out an application and get it permitted. And just so you know, contests on holiday weekends are a no-go.
Oh, and a few more rules to keep it fair and fish-friendly are that any contests targeting Montana’s special concern species are off-limits—except for stocked Yellowstone or Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Also, wild trout in streams or rivers are off-limits for competitions. Play smart, keep it legal, and happy fishing!
