Winter fly fishing tends to spark a lot of opinions, like which flies actually have to work, how cold is too cold, and whether trout even bother eating once the guides start freezing.

The video below breaks all of that down in a practical way, covering where trout actually hold in cold water, what they’re feeding on, and how to rig up so you’re not fighting ice more than fish. It walks through proven winter flies (midges, eggs, scuds, worms, and even streamers), smart adjustments for flows and temperatures, and small tweaks that make a big difference when conditions get brutal.

We also want to remind you that none of this is presented as the only way to do things, because everyone fishes differently. However, it definitely includes some approaches that flat-out work for this guy and make other fishermen nod in agreement.

Watch the video, take what fits your style, ignore what doesn’t, and remember: just because someone does it differently doesn’t mean it is the wrong way.

Here is what other fly fishermen are saying about his video:

@RonMesserschmidt-wc2ui

1 year agoYou have done the most accurate video on information for winter fishing I have ever watched. I have fly fished for 45 years. All year round and I can say all your information is 100 percent correct.

@berks8260

2 years agoGreat information . I’ve been fishing in winter for several years and these fly recommendations are in line with what I have used…very good overview!

@cervidslayer

2 weeks agoSimple, informative, and short, a great video and a new subscriber! Winter may be my hell but I would rather have a slow day in the winter than staying at home.

@let_freedom_ping

11 months agoThis is very helpful. I’m in Indiana and we have only a handful of creeks that are stocked with trout and so far I’ve had zero luck. I got a lot of this same advice from my local fly shops. Not going to stop trying though

@gulliver3644

1 year agoI began fly fishing in 1958. I always loved winter fly fishing in PA, Potter, Tioga, Crawford Co, in fact I had and still have a very old PA stream map I acquired from Harrisburg. It’s huge. I have documented each stream I have fished. Hundreds all over PA. Now 77, my bucket list includes moving back to PA. Maybe around Mix Run. Great area to stretch out and do some Brookie hunting. Back to my roots.
