Fat, Cold, & Wet
If you hate rain and prefer lazy, crystal-clear wading, you might want to stay on the couch this week. The Bitterroot is currently screaming at 3,680 CFS and sitting at a crisp 56.5°F.
It’s still swollen from the late-season snowmelt, and with a persistent rain machine parked over Missoula through Monday, things are going to get interesting. The water is fishable, but expect the river to take on some “coffee with a splash of cream” color after the storms roll through.
The good news? Cloud cover keeps the trout brave, and the rising water means big fish are moving out of their deep hideouts to eat.
The Trout Psychology & Battle Plan
The main current is a treadmill right now. No sane fish is standing in it. To catch them, you have to hunt where they are hiding from the push.
- Morning Strategy (7 AM – 10 AM): High water has the Cutthroat and Browns stacked tight against the banks and tucked into soft, quiet inside seams. Put on a heavy nymph rig, drop it right in their faces, and don’t be stingy with the split shot.
- Midday Window (10 AM – 1 PM): If the rain lets up even a little, look to the slower, shallower flats. The overcast skies are the perfect trigger for Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) and Yellow Sallies. The fish will look up if the hatch hits.
- Evening Window (5 PM – 7 PM): Riffle tailouts are the target. Tie on a caddis pattern and actively skate or twitch it across the top just before dark to trigger aggressive reactionary strikes.
What’s in the Fly Box?
| Playstyle | The Menu | Why It Works |
| The Heavy Articulated Route | Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow (#6) | If the water drops clarity by afternoon, swing this sculpin pattern right along the banks. Big browns want a big meal in the murk. |
| The “Guaranteed Meal” | Pat’s Rubber Legs (#6), Wiggly Worm (#8) | It’s classic post-runoff junk food. High water pushes worms and large stoneflies loose. Drift these deep. |
| The Hatch Matchers | Bionic Hopper (#12), Split Case PMD (#20), GTI Caddis (#12) | If they are rising in the flats, go purple/tan bionic hoppers or small PMD indicators. |
⚠️ Guide’s Rule of Thumb: If the water turns to chocolate milk by Monday afternoon, ditch the tiny #20 PMDs entirely. Go big, go flashy, or go home.
