If you haven’t grabbed your 2026 Montana fishing license yet, don’t wander into a shop expecting a paper handout. As of March 1st, all Montana Fishing and Conservation licenses are strictly online only. Head over to the FWP website on your phone, get legal, and save yourself the headache before you hit the boat ramp.
The Lower Madison is Sweating
The summer heat is doing its thing, which means the Lower Madison is currently under Hoot Owl restrictions. Even stricter: there is a full closure in effect from Ennis Dam down to the pump house.
Below the pump house, you can still fish, but you’ve got to pack it up when the Hoot Owl clock strikes 2:00 PM. Honestly? Do the trout a favor and give the Lower Madison a rest right now. It’s just not worth the stress on the fish (or your conscience).
Where the Fish Are Actually Biting
Don’t pack up the gear just yet. If you need a local fix, the Upper Madison and the Gallatin are stepping up big time. They are fishing incredibly well right now and offer plenty of cold, happy water.
