If you’re looking to snag your Montana trapping license, you need to clear a few hurdles first—specifically, an online course and a mandatory in-person field day.
Good news: the only Trapper Education Field Day happening in north-central Montana this year is hitting Havre on Saturday, August 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s going down at the new FWP office (21 River Road), and yes, it includes that mandatory wolf trapper certification you need.
Here is the game plan to get it done:
- Step 1: Do the homework. You have to finish the 6-to-8-hour online course before showing up. Click over to the FWP Trapping Education page, hit “register for online course,” and use the code FY27MTtrp250003 to skip the fee and get it for free (available for ages 11+).
- Step 2: Lock in your spot. Grab your place for the Havre event right here at Register-Ed.
- Step 3: Show up prepared. Dress for the weather since you’ll be outside learning about ethics, avoiding non-target species, and managing fur. FWP will throw in some snacks and drinks, but pack a lunch and bring a lawn chair if you don’t feel like standing all day.
Can’t make the date? Don’t panic. If August 22 is a no-go, look into the Trapper Apprentice program. If you’re 10 or older, it lets you trap with a mentor for up to two years before you have to worry about official certification. Check out the details on the FWP Apprentice page.
