Drop the throttle and dig out the pink tackle: Canyon Ferry’s south end walleyes are defying the calendar, while the north end trout are finally getting the cool-down memo.
Here’s the latest report by Jonathan Miller with Montana Outdoor-Approved Capital Sports in Helena, Montana!
Canyon Ferry:
South end walleyes are still biting very well. I don’t remember a year where the bite has lasted this long but I am not going to complain either. It is very much a bottom bouncer or lindy rig bite. Just remember that these are slow techniques so keep the boat under 1.0mph as best as possible. Pink has been this year’s hot color but purple, blue and fire tiger are also good options. I would start looking in 15’ of water and slowly work deeper until you start catching fish. Hole in the Wall is a good area to look in as a starting point but it sounds like the whole South end is fishing. Mid lake is also producing fish but its been sporadic. Both White Earth side and Goose flats have been producing fish. On the North end, fishing has been slower but more quality fish are being found with jigs and jerk baits. Metallic silver and gold seem to be the colors of choice.
Rainbows are biting decent on the North end. The color nightly temps have been helping. Deeper diving crankbaits in silver, gold, rainbow or fire tiger patterns are a good choice. If you want to slow down the presentation, cowbells with a wedding ring in chartreuse, red or pink. From White Earth to the dam is the most productive stretch.
