An angler’s Giant Catfish Might Earn Him $20,000

A quick family fishing trip turned into a West Virginia record…and maybe a serious payday—for Tyler Harmon. While fishing the Ohio River with his dad and 4-year-old son, Harmon hooked a whopper of a blue catfish and wrestled it aboard after a 20-minute fight. “We were just hoping to catch a small catfish for my boy to reel in,” Harmon said, according to Field & Stream. Instead, they landed a 72.75-pound monster measuring more than four feet long, officially beating the previous state record.

The catch was memorable for more than its size, too. Harmon’s son briefly mistook the fish for something out of the ocean. “Whenever it surfaced the first time, my boy saw it and started flipping out, thinking it was a shark,” Harmon recalled. Because Harmon caught the catfish using a HellCat rod from Catch the Fever, he may also qualify for the company’s $20,000 state-record payout. Best of all, the fish was released alive.
