Mornings are the prime window, with the canyon and upper river producing the steadiest action. Cooler weather has trout looking up, and ants, hoppers, caddis, and nocturnal stones are keeping the menu interesting. A dry-dropper is the top play, though straight dry-fly fishing is close behind. Hoppers and ants have been especially effective, so this is a fine time to cover some water, find a clean drift, and let a hungry trout make the introduction.
For the two-story approach, hang a small Perdigon or caddis nymph two to three feet below a big attractor dry and concentrate on faster riffles and classic summer water. Dark caddis dries are worth a shot when fish start rising, while hopper and ant patterns can bring some wonderfully unsubtle surface eats. Nymphing remains productive, and a cool, rainy spell could put streamers back on the trout agenda.
