In the confusing world of preserving lands to offset development in sage grouse habitat, a disagreement has arisen. The Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team has divided over the issue of term leases and easements. These leases and easements help preserve sage grouse habitat so that the birds aren’t listed as an endangered species. But the difference in how term leases, which are a minimum of 15 years, and leases in perpetuity has given some MSGOT members heartburn. Discussion of the difference came up at the last team meeting. To learn more about the issue, and how it may affect landowners, check out my story in the Billings Gazette at https://billingsgazette.com/lifestyles/recreation/sage-grouse-conservation-tool-used-unfairly-group-told/article_ef9c8b3c-7053-56b4-acff-b3c1a27c0ace.html.
