DNA study reveals diet of wolves

A new study that analyzed wolf scat DNA gives insight into what exactly these predators are eating.

In a peer-reviewed study from Oregon State University researchers analyzed 301 wolf scats from Prince of Wales Island.

They found the following breakdown of the wolves’ diet:

 

 

In an article breaking down the study, Alaska Fish and Game notes wolves on different islands may have different diets. On Pleasant Island near Gustavus wolves have eaten nearly all of the former deer population, and now prey primarily on sea otters, with  intertidal fish and waterfowl to supplement.
