Your ranch dog probably works harder than most people you know. If that sounds right, the American Farm Bureau wants to hear about it — nominations are open for the 2027 Farm Dog of the Year competition, and the prize package is nothing to shrug at.
This is the ninth year of the competition, backed by Nestlé Purina PetCare, and it exists to recognize the dogs actually keeping America’s farms and ranches operational. We’re not talking about house pets here. We’re talking about the dog that’s already put in two hours of work before you’ve had your first cup of coffee.
What’s at Stake
The winning dog takes home a $5,000 cash prize, a full year’s supply of Purina Pro Plan dog food, a professionally produced video, and recognition at the American Farm Bureau Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina this January. Honestly, the video alone would be worth it for some of the dogs I’ve seen working cattle outside of Dillon or running the fence line on a Hi-Line wheat operation at sunup.
“Farm dogs are often important partners in our daily work as well as wonderful companions for farm families,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “These loyal companions go above and beyond to look after both the land and the farm families they work alongside.”
What Makes a Winner
Judges want dogs that earn their keep. Bringing in livestock, keeping coyotes honest, hauling buckets, opening gates, greeting strangers with the right balance of friendly and firm — the whole package. They’re also looking at the softer stuff: how the dog interacts with the family, whether it knows when to play and when to work, and whether it listens when the day gets long and complicated.
In my experience, the best ranch dogs have an almost uncanny read on what you need before you ask for it. That’s the kind of animal that wins this thing.
The Health Connection
Research from Mayo Clinic and Purina confirms what ranch families in Montana already know firsthand — dogs are good for you. Just 20 minutes with your dog can reduce stress hormones, slow your heart rate, and genuinely improve how you feel. After a day of fixing fence in the wind or sorting cattle in the mud, that’s not nothing. That’s your dog pulling double duty.
“We are honored to continue supporting the hard-working, devoted farm dogs featured in the American Farm Bureau’s Farm Dog of the Year contest,” said Jack Scott from Purina. “Purina proudly uses nutritious ingredients sourced from American farms to make our pet food, and we remain committed to supporting American farmers.”
How to Enter
There’s one requirement — you’ve got to be a Farm Bureau member to nominate your dog. If you’re not already a member, check out options at fb.org/join. Your nomination needs written responses to the contest questions, at least one solid photo of your dog working, and an optional video clip if you’ve got one. Get it all submitted before July 11, 2026.
People’s Choice Award
Don’t count yourself out if your dog doesn’t take the top prize. The People’s Choice Pup competition opens up public voting in September, and the winner there gets $2,500 from Purina. A Border Collie working sheep in the Bitterroot Valley or a cattle dog doing a job nobody asked him to quit on a ranch outside of Malta — those are exactly the kinds of stories that get votes.
Montana’s ranch dogs aren’t pets with a side of farm life. They’re working animals, and they deserve the recognition. If you’ve got one worth nominating, don’t wait on it.
