Ever looked at your ATV and thought, “You know, this would be a lot more impressive if it were currently floating on a lake”? No? Well, the folks over at Cottage Life definitely did, and instead of just questioning their life choices, they actually went and built an ATV-powered barge.
It’s the kind of project that sounds like a late-night “what if” conversation fueled by questionable snacks, but watching it actually work is oddly satisfying.
The team—Andrew and Kevin—decided that the best way to get an ATV across a lake wasn’t to drive through the water (don’t try that at home), but to build a floating platform that lets the ATV act as the engine [00:07].
Here is how they pulled off this aquatic engineering miracle:
- The Foundation: They built a sturdy barge platform using floats that provided about 1,000 lbs of upward force—enough to support them, the 800 lb bike, and a couple of bags of “meat” (essential cargo) [00:39].
- The Power Transfer: They rigged up a system where the ATV’s back wheels sit on top of rotating pipes [02:07]. As the wheels spin, they turn the pipes, which in turn drive external paddle wheels mounted on the sides of the barge [00:24].
- The “Secret” Ingredient: When things got a little friction-heavy, the guys turned to the most rustic lubricant imaginable: lard [01:27]. Nothing says “engineering precision” like greasing your drive system with a bit of kitchen fat [02:33].
- Steering: To make sure they didn’t just spin in circles, they attached a rudder system to the ATV’s handlebars, making it steerable like a very slow, very loud go-kart [01:44].
Does it break any speed records? Absolutely not [03:12]. But watching them drive the ATV onto the barge and slowly chug across the lake is proof that with enough wood, some barrels, and a reckless amount of confidence, you can turn just about anything into a boat.
By the end of it, they were planning to take their new floating contraption all the way to the island, even if the prospect of sailing into the dark did sound a little ominous [03:56].
