If your favorite pastime involves standing thigh-deep in cold river water trying to outwit trout with tiny bits of feathered fluff, take note.
The folks over at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are mapping out how Big Sky Country will manage its rivers and lakes over the coming years, and they are opening the floor for feedback. Whether you have thoughts on local catch limits or just want to ensure your favorite honey hole stays healthy, here is your chance to voice them.
The crew is hosting an in-person meeting in Bozeman on August 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the FWP office located at 1400 S. 19th Ave. The goal is to break down the upcoming 2027–2030 Statewide Fisheries Management Plan and preview the proposed fishing regulations slated for 2027–2028.
Why the regular tune-up? In the words of the agency’s announcement:
“The plan, which is updated every four years, identifies statewide fisheries-management goals, priorities, and strategies intended to sustain and enhance Montana’s fisheries and angling opportunities.”
River flows change, population numbers shift, and every four years managers need updated roadmaps to keep conservation efforts grounded in real data rather than old habits.
If you cannot make the Bozeman session in person, you do not have to sit on the sidelines. You can view the proposed plan and draft environmental assessment online via the Montana FWP Public Comment Portal, with public comments open through September 14. Check it out, drop your feedback, and make sure your perspective is on record before the final rules take shape.
