Madison River Fishing Report-Ennis Dam to Three Forks 10.30.26

The thirty miles from Ennis Dam to Three Forks get written off every July and then ignored long after the reason expires — which, this October 30, 2026 report by Madison River Fishing, is the whole point. The McAllister gauge read 43.7°F at 1,270 cfs with good clarity (7:03 PM MDT, Oct 29) after an overnight near 43.5° and 1,250, a degree colder than the Upper. Shallow Ennis Lake draws off the top, so the same water that bakes this reach in August now chills it, and there’s no FWP thermal restriction anywhere near it — the stretch is open and legal dawn to dark. The fish have already shifted: metabolism down, holding deep and slow, unwilling to chase. With the weed beds sloughing apart you’ll foul flies often, but all the crayfish and big invertebrates they sheltered are now drifting loose, which is why crayfish patterns and chunky attractor nymphs dragged along the bottom have been the steadiest bet all month.

The reason to go is Bear Trap Canyon — walk-in only, trailhead off Highway 84 at the downstream end, about nine miles of trail toward the dam, no road and no shortcut, and almost nobody past mile two. Its boulder runs and deep slots are classic fall holding water, with browns getting aggressive ahead of the spawn; BWOs will show on gray afternoons over the gravel-bar flats as a bonus, not a plan. Fish 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. — September’s dawn bite is gone. Point fly a crayfish or Rubber Legs, trailer a zebra midge or Juju Baetis, weight it to tick bottom, dead-drift the slots and let the rig swing out through the tailout; in the canyon, strip streamers short and slow with long pauses. Want numbers? Go upstream. Want a genuinely large brown and silence? Pack a lunch and walk — that trade is on the table daily until Thanksgiving.
