Ever wonder what it looks like when lightning strikes your car? One Texas driver doesn’t have to wonder—he caught the whole thing on camera. On July 25, Austin Garland was driving through stormy weather on Highway 59 between Wharton and El Campo when a brilliant bolt struck the hood of his truck. His footage shows heavy rain just before the flash—then boom, a direct hit. On social media, Garland, stunned but unharmed, called it the “most insane lightning storm” he’d ever seen and said the strike even damaged the road. People often think they’re safe in a car because of rubber tires, but… not exactly. And if lightning can pull off that kind of drama in Texas, you’d better believe it can happen under Montana’s big skies, too. However, not everybody believes this footage is real, and with AI becoming more and more overpowering, it really is hard to say what is real and what isn’t these days.

With our wide-open spaces that are sometimes accompanied by storms, if it is real, it is a good reminder that when thunder starts rumbling, nowhere is off-limits—not even the hood of your truck.
