Current Conditions
The Jefferson River is a good option right now. Cool weather has kept conditions steady, and with fewer anglers on the water, it’s a nice pick if you’re looking for quieter water. Weed growth has also eased up, giving more clean water to work with.
Nymphing has been good with zirdles, zonkers, and stonefly attractors up top, followed by small perdigons like rainbow warriors, spanish bullets, and lite brites, as well as prince nymphs or zebra midges down below. The river is low and clear, so fishing these rigs through buckets and deeper slots has been the best.
Terrestrials are still worth a try midday. Hoppers are a good option for prospecting the banks in the lower river and up near Twin Bridges.
Streamer fishing has stayed a little slow, but it’s still a good way to find a bigger trout. Natural and olive streamers have been the most consistent.
Overall, the Jefferson is in good shape for anglers fly fishing Bozeman. Nymph rigs remain the most consistent approach, terrestrials can still turn heads, and streamers give you a shot at a quality fish.
