Current Water Conditions
- The Standouts (Fair – 3/5): The Bighorn River, Fort Peck Lake, and Bighorn Lake offer your best shot right now. Fish the feeding windows to find steady action.
- The Grind (Slow – 2/5): Most major trout highways and reservoirs—including the Madison, Yellowstone, Gallatin, Missouri (Craig), Blackfoot, and Flathead Lake—are running sluggish for many anglers. Reports suggest that you’ll have to put in the work, change up presentations, and hunt for active pockets.
- Tough Going (1/5): The Big Hole River is currently the hardest nut to crack—pick your battles or look elsewhere for an easier bite.
The Bigger Picture Water temps are hovering around the 60°F mark, and while overall peak activity for the state hits around April, Montana’s strictly wild-trout management and open stream-access laws mean world-class fish are always out there. Just be sure your Montana fishing license and AIS Prevention Pass are squared away before heading out!
