East Fork of Bitterroot River Fishing Report 9.8.25

The East Fork is a great option for wade anglers this time of year. Flows are low, clear, and stable, making for excellent walk-and-wade conditions. The fish are concentrated in deeper runs and pools, especially by afternoon.

Dry Fly Opportunities

• Mahoganies are the top dry right now, with fish rising steadily when the hatch is on.
• BWOs are starting to show, particularly on overcast days.
• Small caddis and ants are working in riffled water and along grassy edges.

Nymphs & Droppers

• Hare’s ears, small prince nymphs, and zebra midges are reliable patterns.
• Perdigons and smaller tungsten nymphs get down quickly in pocket water.
• A dry-dropper rig with a size 12–14 parachute adams and a small beadhead nymph has been producing well.

Fishing Strategy

• Work pocket water and riffles in the morning, then focus on deeper pools as the day warms.
• Be prepared to fish small emergers and lighter tippet when trout pod up and feed selectively.
• Fish are spooky in clear water—approach pools quietly and make your first cast count.
