The Flathead National Forest today released the proposal to reconstruct the wastewater treatment system that serves the bay loop of the 42-site Holland Lake Campground, associated RV dump station, and Holland Lake Lodge to restore the system to operational status. Project documents are available for public review on the project webpage: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/flathead/projects/68935

The proposal includes replacement of a portion of the existing infrastructure with a similar lagoon system with modernized components, designed to handle the same amount of waste material as the existing system. The Forest Service contracted a private engineering firm to develop the system design and has been in consultation with Montana Department of Environmental Quality on the reconstruction proposal.

“Holland Lake Lodge has provided a unique recreation opportunity and a destination for forest visitors to enjoy the Flathead National Forest for one hundred years,” said Forest Supervisor Anthony Botello. “I look forward to this opportunity becoming available again into the future as we take this next step in bringing the infrastructure back into operation.”

Based on a preliminary assessment, the proposal appears to be consistent with a categorical exclusion 7 CFR Part 1b.4(d)(44): Construction, reconstruction, decommissioning, or disposal of buildings, infrastructure, or improvements at an existing recreation site, including infrastructure or improvements that are adjacent or connected to an existing recreation site and provide access or utilities for that site. Activities within this category are intended to apply to facilities located at recreation sites managed by the Forest Service and those managed by concessioners under a special use authorization.
