For those who need a reminder, or may know somebody who does need one….bison may look calm, but they are wild, unpredictable, and capable of running about three times faster than humans. If you see one, admire it from a serious distance–like at least 25 yards.
What NOT to do around a bison:
❌ Do not approach it, even for a photo or selfie.
❌ Do not get within 25 yards (23 meters). If the bison comes closer, move away to maintain that distance.
❌ Do not stand your ground if it threatens or charges you. Move or run away and seek cover, such as behind a vehicle or sturdy object.
❌ Do not ignore warning signs such as head bobbing, pawing the ground, bellowing, bluff charging, or a raised tail. Those are signs you’re too close.
❌ Do not honk at, crowd, or drive aggressively toward bison on the road. Stay in your vehicle, be patient, and let them move along.
Use your zoom, not your feet. If a wild animal reacts to your presence, you’re already too close.
Remember: 25 yards is the minimum, not a photo opportunity. Give bison room to be bison.
