Gary Rueb—aka the Black Jaw Fly Guy—and the Captain have been chasing salmon out on Fort Peck the last couple of weeks. Some days it was one, two, or three fish, but they had at least one banner day where five salmon hit the deck.
The hot ticket was flies. The Black Jaw Gold Dollar, Eye Catcher, and Ghost Fly have been getting most of the bites, with a copper-colored fly turning heads one day, too. They even picked off a salmon with a meat rig, and a full-size Brad’s Black got some action as well.
With flashers, it was mostly 8-inchers doing the work, but they’re still pulling 11-inch flashers and seeing some action there, too.
The depth zone is 60–90 feet right now. The dam area lit up for a while, as did the stretch west of York Island all the way to Bell Point.
The best news is that there seems to be more salmon in the system, with most fish in the 10–20 pound range…and a few bruisers tipping the scales at 25. There is plenty of company out there, so be sure to give your fellow anglers space….especially those running Dipsy Divers and boards.
