Strange weather, changing fish. The Gallatin is trending in the right direction as unseasonably warm January temps begin to improve conditions.

Flow Data: Gallatin River near Gallatin Gateway, MT
Fishing has been a little bit slow on the Gallatin recently but seems to be picking up over the last few days. The weather is really nice for the next week. Really weird weather for January in MT. The fishing will be the best during the warmest parts of the day. Focus on slower moving water, about walking speed, to find the most fish. A double nymph rig will the the way to go. Small rubberlegs, worms, midges, and mayfly nymphs have all worked really. Don’t forget your perdigons as well. Nymphing 4-5 feet under the bobber has been most productive. If you try a streamer, small and natural have seemingly worked best. Olive, black and brown are my go to colors in the fall/winter. Sometimes when the sun is high, flashy streamers can gain more attention.
