If you—or a future hunter in your household—need to check the education box before heading afield, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has plenty of spring options lined up in south-central Montana. From in-person classes to online shortcuts (with a field day twist), here’s the lowdown—minus the fine print headache.

What you need to know

  • Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985 must complete Hunter Education to buy a Montana hunting license
  • A Bow-and-Arrow license requires Bowhunter Education (or proof of a past bow license from another state or province)
  • Kids can hunt as Apprentice Hunters starting at age 10
  • Options vary by age, schedule, and how much screen time you want

In-person classes (free and hands-on)

  • Led by experienced volunteer instructors who actually know their stuff
  • Focus on safety, ethics, and real-world hunting skills
  • Hunter Ed locations: Columbus (Feb 21), Bridger & Worden (Feb 23), Laurel & multiple Billings middle schools (March 16)
  • Bowhunter Ed: Roundup (starts Feb 11)
  • Ages 10–11 can attend Hunter Ed but won’t be fully certified until age 12
  • Must be 11+ for Bowhunter Education

Online course + field day (best of both worlds)

  • Available for ages 12–17 (or turning 12 by Jan. 16 of the license year)
  • Online course + free in-person field day = certification
  • Costs: $25 (Hunter Ed), $30 (Bowhunter Ed)
  • Field days:
    • Hunter Ed in Billings (Feb 26, morning & afternoon)
    • Bowhunter Ed in Roundup (Feb 14) and Billings (Feb 21)

Online-only option

  • For ages 18 and up
  • Fully self-paced, no field day required (though FWP highly recommends one)
  • Same costs: $25 Hunter Ed / $30 Bowhunter Ed

Want to give back?

  • FWP is always looking for volunteer instructors
  • Great fit if you care about hunting’s future, safety, and passing on Montana traditions

Bottom line: whether you want classroom learning, online convenience, or a mix of both, there’s a spring option ready to go. Classes fill up fast, so if hunting season is on your mind, now’s the time to get signed up.
