For young hunters dreaming about their first turkey hunt, this is the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around every day. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is teaming up with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) to host a special youth turkey hunt in the Flathead Valley, giving kids the chance to learn the ropes alongside experienced mentors in the field. It’s a great way for young hunters to gain hands-on experience, pick up valuable skills, and spend a weekend chasing gobblers in one of Montana’s most scenic corners.
The hunt is scheduled for May 2–3, 2026, but there’s one important date before the hunting begins. All selected participants will attend a mandatory safety orientation on May 1, making sure everyone is prepared before heading into the woods. Each youth hunter will also be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian and an NWTF volunteer mentor, creating a safe, supportive environment where beginners can learn everything from calling techniques to ethical hunting practices.
Even better, the application is completely free—but the deadline is coming up soon. To be eligible, applicants must be between 10 and 15 years old, hold a valid hunting license for the current year, and submit only one application (duplicate applications will result in disqualification).
Winners will be selected through a drawing on March 21 during the NWTF banquet at The Rendezvous in Columbia Falls, and applicants do not need to be present to win.
If you’ve got a young hunter in the family who’s ready to experience their first turkey hunt—or add another adventure to their growing hunting story—this is a great chance to get them out in the field.
