The weather might be damp, but the fish are active! Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) officials Troy Humphrey and Chris Hurley have dropped the latest updates for Canyon Ferry, Hauser, and Holter Reservoirs. From inconsistent walleye bites to excellent rainbow trout action, FWP has exactly where to look and what lures to tie on this week:
Canyon Ferry: Walleye fishing has been inconsistent at times with all the rainy weather. Try from the Silos to between Ponds 3 and 4, including the river mouth in 8-12 feet of water while using bottom bouncers with spinner blades or slow death rigs in purple, pink, orange or red colors. Mid reservoir action is around Snaggy Bay/Goose Bay and from White Earth north to Gull Island on fire tire or orange crankbaits or green/chartreuse jigs with a worm in 15-20 feet of water. Rainbows are being caught by walleye anglers or by those trolling cowbells or spoons on the north end. Shore fishing has produced both rainbows and walleyes on worms or jigs with a worm around the Silos and White Earth. Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena
Hauser: It was a rainy weekend but fishing for both walleye and rainbows has been good. Boat anglers below Canyon Ferry Dam have been catching rainbows with various nymphs and streamers and trolling flashers with a worm and spinner around White Sandy and Soup Creek has been producing good numbers of trout in the early morning. Walleye fishing has been good inside the Causeway Arm and around the Eldorado Bar dredge piles while pitching jigs tipped with crawlers or leeches or trolling worm harnesses with bronze or fire-tiger spinner blades. Shore anglers are catching a few walleye from the Causeway Bridge with various jigs or slip bobbers with crawlers or leeches. An occasional norther pike is being caught while searching for walleye. Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena
Holter: The weekend was a wet, but the rainbow trout fishing has been great while using various nymphs and streamers near the Gates of the Mountains. On the lower end of the reservoir, boat anglers have been catching good numbers of trout while trolling flashers and spinner combos. A few nice walleye and perch are being caught inside the Canyon, near Cottonwood Creek, and around the Clay Banks while pitching jigs and crawlers, trolling bottom bouncers and worm harnesses, or using slip bobbers and leeches. Some anglers are catching a few walleye from the docks at the BLM boat ramp with jigs and worms. A few kokanee salmon are being found while trolling various flashers with wedding rings or Hoochies tipped with corn near Split Rock and just above the Dam. A few northern pike are being caught around weed beds while casting spinners or spoons. Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena
