The Blackfoot River is officially in prime summer mode—low, crystal clear, and all about big foam bugs. Blackfoot River Outfitters reported in their July 24, 2026 report that the canyon winds are picking up and the mountain heat is on, meaning the local trout have shifted entirely to the terrestrial buffet.
Before you hitch up the trailer, though, there are two major safety hazards you need to know to save your boat and your sanity:
- The Bridge Closure: As of July 15, the river is completely closed to floating from the Weigh Station Fishing Access Site downstream to the I-90 bridge due to railway construction.
- The North Fork Logjam: There is a nasty new obstruction below Harry Morgan on the North Fork that has already claimed a few rafts. Do not try to be a hero—either walk your boat around it or just put in at River Junction instead. Watch out for new storm debris river-wide, too.
The Strategy With weekend temps pushing into the 90s near Ovando, water temperatures are creeping up toward 70 degrees by midday. Get out early to beat the heat.
Ditch the hyper-delicate tailwater gear and the 6X tippet. The Blackfoot is all about high-visibility, high-floating fun right now. Rig up a fast-action 5WT or 6WT rod with a stout 7.5-foot 3X or 4X leader to punch through the afternoon wind.
What’s Biting Your absolute best bet right now is a heavy-duty dry-dropper setup fished tight against deep plunge pools, heavy boulder pockets, and shady, grassy cutbanks:
- On Top: Float a big, buoyant size 8 Chubby Chernobyl, Sweetgrass Hopper, or a Foam Beetle. If you spot noses breaking the water in the early morning tailouts, switch to a single foam ant or caddis.
- Down Below: Hang a general attractor nymph—like a Prince Nymph, Jigged Hare’s Ear, Duracell, or a Frenchie—about 2 to 3 feet below your dry fly.
