Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center Temporarily Closes for Heater Repairs

FORT BENTON, Mont. – The Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center will temporarily close Nov. 3 to accommodate heating system repairs, ensuring a safe and comfortable indoor experience will be ready for visitors and staff when the center is slated to reopen in mid-December.

There’s still lots to do and enjoy outside in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.

Coal Banks Landing and James Kipp campgrounds remain open until Monday, Dec. 1, and hunting, dispersed camping, and hiking opportunities abound throughout the monument’s more than 375,000 acres.

Be prepared for outdoor cold weather adventures. Be realistic about the increased difficulty level of traveling and recreating in the winter. Walking or hiking over icy or snow-covered terrain is much more difficult than during summer conditions. Hunters should confirm Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks’ hunting seasons and regulations for any area considered.

During the MBIC’s temporary closure, visitors needing information on fall and winter activities in the monument can call and leave a message and call-back number at 406-622-4000. Monument staff will return calls as soon as possible. Monument rangers will still be available for classroom education programs.

Maps and other information about the monument are available at the Bureau of Land Management’s Lewistown and Havre field offices. Water-repellent, printed versions of the guides and maps are available for $10 each. They can be purchased in person, by credit card over the phone, or by mailing a check. Contact the Lewistown Field Office at 406-538-1900 or the Havre Field Office at 406-262-2856 for details.

Visitors can also plan their trip to the monument and view or download digital maps online.
