Bozeman, MT (May 13, 2024) — The opening of Hyalite Canyon Road has been delayed and is now scheduled for noon on Friday, May 17th. This adjustment comes after the area received over 24 inches of snow this past week, significantly impacting the Hyalite drainage, and delaying scheduled road maintenance efforts.

Road crews are diligently working to complete necessary pavement repair work. To ensure the safety of both the workers and the public, and to facilitate the efficient completion of this work, Hyalite Canyon Road will remain closed to all motor vehicles until the new opening time. The Forest Service appreciates the public’s patience and understanding during this time.

While the road is closed to motor vehicles, non-motorized use of the area is still allowed. Visitors choosing to recreate behind the gate should be aware they may encounter heavy machinery and road equipment. For everyone’s safety, please travel slowly and exercise caution around all equipment.

Additionally, various other gates across the district and forest are slated to open on May 16th, conditions permitting. Visitors are advised to consult the Custer Gallatin Motor Vehicle Use Map for further information.

We thank the community for their cooperation and look forward to welcoming visitors back to Hyalite Canyon Road under safer conditions. For more information call the Bozeman Ranger District at (406) 522-2520.
