Montana’s weather has been keeping things interesting lately — and not necessarily in the way we’d like. According to Meteorologist Ryan Dennis, our mostly dry start to February has allowed drought conditions to tighten their grip across much of the state. While winter typically gives us a steady recharge, this year has been a bit stingy with the moisture, and it is starting to show.
The hardest-hit area right now is the Golden Triangle, where conditions have slipped into extreme drought territory in some spots — including around Great Falls. That is serious territory on the drought scale.
One important note: this update does not yet factor in the moisture we picked up from Tuesday through today, so we’ll see how much that recent system helps. For now, though, keep in mind that even in winter, Montana can dry out faster than we’d like, and every bit of precipitation matters.
