This winter has been unusually cooperative, according to the latest report by Rising Trout Fly Fishing Outfitters, and the rivers have responded in kind. Rather than dealing with prolonged deep freezes, steady mild temperatures have kept conditions stable and trout more active than typical for this time of year.
Water clarity has remained solid, flows have stayed consistent, and fish have maintained a dependable feeding rhythm. Subsurface presentations have continued to produce most consistently, with periodic afternoon surface activity appearing under cloud cover. Streamer anglers have also seen improved success during warming trends by slowing down presentations and targeting softer water.
As the calendar inches toward spring, conditions are shaping up favorably. Snowpack levels are hovering near average, positioning the region for a manageable runoff—provided temperatures rise gradually without dramatic warm spikes. The extended forecast points to continued mild patterns, which should slowly elevate water temperatures and increase trout activity.
The coming weeks often deliver some of the most underrated fishing of the year, with lighter angling pressure, strengthening hatches, and early signs of spring momentum beginning to build. It’s the ideal window to dial in gear, refresh fly selections, and prepare for the more pronounced spring opportunities just ahead.
