FORT PECK, MT — Campers and visitors at the Fort Peck Downstream Campground will need to pack some extra water bottles this week.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced that a major potable waterline has broken, cutting off the water supply to a large portion of the recreational area. Despite recent weather, officials clarified that external factors weren’t entirely to blame. “We didn’t get THAT much rain,” USACE noted, pointing instead to a standard infrastructure failure.
Affected Areas and Outages
The break has disrupted several key facilities within the park. If you are planning a visit, keep in mind that there is currently no water access at the following locations:
- Standard Campsites
- Kiwanis Park
- The Campground Dump Station
What’s Still Open
Fortunately, it’s not a total washout for the campground. The group loop area was not impacted by the break. As a result, the restroom facility located at the back of the campground remains fully operational with running water.
Maintenance crews are already on-site tackling the issue. USACE officials confirmed that teams are currently digging to locate the breach, sourcing the necessary replacement parts, and working hard to return water to the campground as quickly as possible.
An exact timeline for the restoration has not yet been released, but the USACE expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation, stating, “Thanks for your patience. Stay tuned.”
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own drinking and utility water for the time being. Further updates will be provided as the repair work progresses.
