Missouri River (Toston to Canyon Ferry):
With the hot temps the fish have slowed down a little bit but are still biting in the slow moving pockets. Mainly drop shots with some kind of bug looking pattern or leech. A jig and pinched crawler works too. The hard part is navigating through all the crud flowing down from the algae blooms. But if you are willing to keep the line clean between casts there are some decent sized fish to be caught throughout that whole stretch.
Missouri River (Holter to Great Falls):
The main hatch right now for dries seems to be caddis. Though there are some hoppers finally showing up as well. Trying a hopper and dropper can be extremely efficient and lethal. Purple lightning bugs, scuds and hare’s ear all work for the dropper. Just mind the weeds as you are likely to get the dropper hung up in them now with all the weed growth. In the lower stretches closer to Ulm, pike are being caught in slow water with bigger streamers. So if you have the means to travel that stretch it can be a lot of fun.
