Injured hunter rescued by helicopter more than 10 miles into Absaroka Range

A hunter with a suspected broken leg and ankle was rescued by helicopter after becoming injured more than 10 miles from the Mill Creek Trailhead in the Absaroka Range.

According to Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue, crews were called Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25, to assist Park County with the rescue.

Volunteers from the Heli-Alpine and communications teams responded. Despite low clouds and fog around Bozeman, Central Copters was able to transport a three-person rescue team to the injured hunter.

Rescuers stabilized the hunter’s leg before transporting him to Livingston Medical Center for further treatment.

Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer praised the hunting party for keeping the injured man warm and being prepared for backcountry conditions.

Officials remind outdoor recreationists to prepare for changing weather and emergencies, as rescue crews may not always be able to respond immediately.
